ときどき県南の市場で見かけるが、どうやって食べられるのか、全く知らないと言っていい。おそらく釣りの外道であろうが、基本は刺身らしい。煮魚にしても良いとか。
しかし、やたら目立つ魚ではある。目が大きく、底光りして「めひかり」と呼ばれることがあるらしい。「めひかり」と言えば、宮崎の底引き網で捕られるアオメエソも「めひかり」と呼ばれるので要注意である。その他「めんぱ」「めんぱち」とも呼ばれるらしいが・・・
