大分弁では「めじか」「めとご」「めだか」と呼ばれます。顔を見るとカエルにそっくりで！目の玉が飛び出てる。さわった時にヌリュッとしてる、つまり鱗のザラザラした感じがないのでマコガレイと見分けられます。
ご存知のとおり変態によって左目が移動し、片側によるが、その時の大きさは1〜2cm程度の仔魚のときである。私はこのカエルのような目と顔はかわいいと思うが、恐らく海底の砂に潜って、このかわいい目だけをだして虎視耽々（こしたんたん）と獲物を狙っているんだろう。

Meitagarei Pleuronichthys cornutus is called "Mejika","Metogo"
or "Medaka". "Mejika" means "Projecting eyes".
Compared with other flat fish, the body is more slippy, so you can distinguish
the flat fish. Larva of this fish is normal looking, but body is 1~2 cm
length and left eye move another side.
The face looks like a frog. I think that it's a funny face. The fish dives
into the mud, but the eyes are on the mud and, it are good for catch the
game.

06255 マコガレイ (Makogarei) Limanda yokohamae
大分弁では「あまて」「あまがれい」でしょう。単に「かれい」と言えばこれを指す場合がある。いわゆる「城下がれい」ですね。旨さは★★★でしょう。日出で食べるなら「的山荘」がありますが、ここのレベルは高いので、庶民にはなかなか敷居が高い。「月の家（読みは「つきのや」だったかな？）」あたりここがいい。（'97年2月日出）
