- The Nobeoka Philharmonic Orchestra (NPO) was established on January 10, 1989 as an amateur classic player's group sponsored by an organization of individual supporters. Only a few local cities in Japan with a population of less than 130000 have a full orchestra. Overcoming many difficulties, NPO held its first concert successfully on June 24 in 1989. The orchestra has been developing through annual concerts (family concerts, chamber concerts, etc.) which reached the ninth in October of 1999. NPO has been accepting requests of concerts including the 60th anniversary concert of the City of Nobeoka to try to share the joy of classic music with many people.
Professional conductors have been directing NPO from the flfth annual concert. In the fifth year of its history, NPO visited Miyazaki city, the capital of Miyazaki prefecture to perform. NPO also has been contributing actively to the community by giving string instrument classes in cooperation with the Nobeoka United Culture Center.
This year's concert in Medford, Nobeoka's sister city, is one of the original plans dating back to the foundation of the NPO.
