This is an exceptional year. In this year of the Millennium, we are celebrating not only the 20th anniversary of the Sister City pledge between the cities of Medford and Nobeoka, but also the 15th anniversary of the Nobeoka Choral Symphony Group and the 10th anniversary of the Nobeoka Philharmonic Orchestra. On this joyous occasion, the Nobeoka Philharmonic Orchestra, in conjunction with the Nobeoka Choral Symphony Group, is proud to perform both Beethoven's 9th Symphony and a piece entitled "Illusion Far Beyond" for your enjoyment and the commemoration of this historic year.
"Illusion Far Beyond" is a piece composed by Dr. Jiro Mikami, currently a professor at Nagasaki University, who hails from Hyuga City, Nobeoka's next-door neighbor. It is a piece which captures the essence of Northern Miyazaki.
The planning for this anniversary concert began over three years ago with the formation of the Medford 2000 Anniversary Concert Committee on October 21st, 1996. Since then, the committee has been meeting about once a month and has been in regular contact with organizers in Medford in order to complete the planning for the 20th anniversary concert. We began the search for concert participants and supporters in the fall of last year, and the response has been overwhelming. Participants and supporters now number over 240 people.
However, this anniversary isn't only about the concert, starting with the welcoming party the people of Medford have so graciously prepared, and culminating in the anniversary concert, this visit is an excellent opportunity for the members of both of our communities to get together and learn more about each other.
On a personal note, the chance to cross the ocean and perform Beethoven's 9th Symphony ("An Die Freude") for you is a wonderful experience for us all that we will cherish for a lifetime.
In closing, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the people who have worked for this concert including Mayor McGlynn and Mr. Leslie B. Lewis.
We look forward to meeting you !
