Mieko Nagano : January,1997 Oita City, JAPAN

In the new year season, children used to play battledore and shuttlecock. Girls were anxious about their kimono sleeves not to get twisted. The high hitting sound of battledore and flying shuttlecock in the air was the symbol of the lovely children who enjoyed the new year. The battledore decorated with kabuki actor's portraits was an important treasure which was put neatly at the Japanese alcove when out of use. Spinning tops in the alley was also a pleasant play. Whose top was spinning longest, who could spin it on the tight rope, and tried to spin on the palm top. Skillful children were the heroes among them indeed.
