I hear the news of rice reaping here and there.

As I felt uneasy about the rice paddies, I went down to take a look of them after a long time.

October13th(Mon.) clear

It is a windless, calm autumn clear day. On my way to the paddies, I could view Mt.Yufu and Mt.Tsurumi shining distinctly against the blue sky. I saw on the right persimon trees full of the fruits.B

There are wide spread golden rice fields in front of me. I hear the engine sound. It is a combine. I dashed to it and asked the farmer to let me take pictures of harvesting.

The combine is working in the paddy.

The combine cuts three rows of rice root at the same time. The operator was dispatched from an agricultural cooperative along with the machine to harvest the paddy. The owner of the paddy stands apart and look monitors the safty of the harvesting work. As his wife was near him, I asked her about the harvest.

"The price of a combine comes to about 3 million yen in this type.300 As it is very difficult to purchase the machine, I borrow it." she said. The brand name of this rice is "Hino-hikari" or "Sunshine."

The reaped rice plant is processed in the machine to separate grain from the stalk which is shredded into pieces and scattered on the dry paddies.

The grain of rice is automatically gathered and packed in the bag. A bag contains about 30kilograms of rice.

The bag will be transported to the Rice Center in Hita city in which it is further processed to unhulled rice, unpolished rice, and finally to polished rice for serve. In the earliest case, it can be cooked tomorrow, she said.

I still can see rice paddies waiting for reaping. I suppose it comes from the difference in kind of rice.

Through the on-line report of "Rice Growing", we can finally get the final product.

I felt keenly that we should make much more important of the rice, the principal food of Japanese. I appreciate those people who produce rice, nature of Japan, and our fragile green earth. Thank you very much for your patience of viewing the site. l
