Mona is a former record holder at the half marathon (at Tokyo in 1993) and claimed a gutsy Bronze medal over 10,000m at 1998 Commonwealth Games, despite a nagging knee injury that he finally had operate on later that year. Mona is married with two children, and is coached by Australian National Olympic Coach (and former Olympic Marathoner), Chris Wardlaw. He still works part-time in Ballarat as an education consultant, and is now coaching himself recently one of his athletes ran 13:14 for 5000m to break an Australian record that had stood for more than twenty years. Now fully recovered from his 1998 knee surgery, Mona placed seventh in the 2000 Tokyo International Marathon, securing a spot on the Australian Olympic Team for an amazing fourth time.

Steve and his family are expecting another child in July '00. His superstition is he likes to wear a new or favourite pair of shoes before competing. When he isn't out running he enjoys music, wine and taking on his friends in a card game of 500. The marathon man has won the Ballarat Sports Person of the Year Award six times, '89 Vic Sport Male Sports Star of Year, '90 Confederation of Aust Sport, Sports Star of Year and was ranked the '94 Athletics International No.1 marathoner in the world. Steve and family will be moving into their new Ballarat home after the Olympics, taking with them their pet cats Annie and Jake. Steve's wife, Tanya, gave birth to their first boy, Matthew, on 4th July'00. Ballarat's favourite son, Mona ran his first marathon at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games and surprised with his bronze medal. Affectionately referred to as "Mona", he had his first marathon win at Berlin in 1990. He will run his first marathon in Australia at the 2000 Olympics and will look to follow on from past Commonwealth gold and World Championships bronze medals.
