A Day's Trip to Mt. Aso by JR Train
During your stay in Beppu, it may be interesting to visit Mt. Aso as a day's trip taking the following pieces of information into account:
JR Kyushu-Odan Express
- The Kyushu-Odan Express starting from JR Beppu Station is the direct train to/from JR Aso Station, whose current appropriate timetable is shown below.

Sanko Bus from JR Aso Station to Mt. Aso ("Aso-san Nishi-eki" Bus stop)
- There is one bus in every hour during day time operated by Sanko Bus company to go to/from Mt. Aso ("Aso-san Nishi-eki" bus stop) from JR Aso Station, and this is practically the only transportation method, except taxi/rental car, to reach the crater of Mt. Aso "Naka-dake".
Ropeway to the Crater of Mt. Aso "Naka-dake"
- Ropeway is operated in every several minutes between the bus stop ("Aso-san Nishi-eki" bus stop) and the crater of Mt. Aso "Naka-dake".
Miscellaneous information
- It should be noted that the access to the crater of Mt. Aso "Naka-dake"can be restricted because of such factors as volcanic gas density and wind direction.
- Another bus stop of "Kusa-senri" at panoramic grass field is located between the JR Aso Station and the Mt. Aso ("Aso-san Nishi-eki") bus stop, and it would be suggested to get off at the "Kusa-senri" bus stop after having visited the crater of Mt. Aso "Naka-dake", since there is Aso Volcano Museum at "Kusa-senri" and even if the access to the crater is restricted, the inside of the crater can be seen through live on-line cameras at the museum. - Restaurants or cafes are available around "Kusa-senri" and JR Aso Station.
From Kannawa to JR Beppu Station
- For example, in order to get on the 07:52 Kyushu-Odan Express at JR Beppu Station, it would be appropriate to take either of the following buses at "Jigokubaru" Bus stop which is one-minute walk from YOKOSO ryokan:
