1. Aim
- One of the main aims of Beppu Argerich Music Festival is to provide high-level master classes taught by top professional pianists in order to assist promising young pianists achieve the goal of becoming world-class professional pianists.

- Contents
- Students will be divided into two classes, one given by Martha Argerich(assisted by J.Margulis),the other by Vitaly Margulis.
- Lessons will be given three hours a day for four days.
- Each student of the Argerich class is supposed to have the opportunity to receive two lessons from Argerich in person.
- Concert by Master Class Students
- A concert will be performed by all master class students on 29th November 1998.
3. Number of Students
- Four students for the class given by Argerich(assisted by J. Margulis)
- Four students for the class given by V. Margulis
4. Eligibility
- This class is open to pianists aiming to be world-class professionals and who were born on or between 1st January 1973 and 31st December 1981, and who also fulfill the following terms:
- 1)Residents of Japan or in case of residents of other countries or regions those who are admitted by the sponsors of this music festival
- 2)Those who are recommended by music authorities or their teachers.
5.Works for the Class
- Preferred works can be selected for the Class. Please indicate your preferred works of solos and/or concertos in the application form.
6. Procedure
- The first selection
- The applicants must fill in the application form and send it with the following:
- (1)An audio cassette tape of the obligatory work and a work of choice performed by the applicant(Please label the tapes showing the applicant's name and titles of recorded pieces.)
- (2)A letter of recommendation from music authorities or their teachers
- (3)Curriculum vitae of the applicant
- (4)A photo-copy of the receipt issued on payment of the 2,000 Japanese yen selection fee
- Selection fee shall be remitted to the following account:

- The Second Selection
- Those who pass the first selection must send a video tape(VHS/NTSC)of the obligatory work and a work of choice performed by applicants. The video images should focus on the pianist's hands and figure.

The Obligatory Work
CHOPIN: No.4 from Etudes Op.10
A Work of Choice
Any work composed between 1801 and 1945 and of less than ten minutes' duration
8. Application Term
- The First Selection:The application must reach the Secretariat by 15th August 1998.
- The Second Selection:The application by those who pass the first selection, whose result will be notified around 1st September, must reach the Secretariat by 12th September 1998.

10. Jury
- The following will judge in the first selection:
- Kei Ito (Pianist)
- Chisato Ogino (Pianist)
- Yasushi Hirose (Professor of Toho Gakuen School of Music)
- Kazuoki Fujii (Pianist)
- Argerich and Margulis will judge in the second selection.
11. Fees for Selection and Lessons
- Selection Fee: 2,000 Japanese yen(paid by all applicants)
- Lesson Fee: 30,000 Japanese yen(paid by students taking lessons)
12. Transportation and Living Expenses
- The cost of travel, accomodation and meals during the stay are the responsibility of the students.
- Accommodation can be referred if necessary.
